After drawing different art deco inspired pieces I have
moved onto much more structured architecture, I started to struggle drawing
from the images and was not happy with my outcomes. I prefer the clear shapes
from my body drawings and the minimalistic look. I thought I’d try a different
kind of detailed drawing so I moved onto different kind of structural
buildings, with neater lines and more straight shapes than the curves and
patterns of art deco.
I’ve drawn from the arch de triumph and some modern
buildings in different cities I have been to over summer, like Liverpool and
Manchester which I unfortunately didn’t capture with my camera. Although I did
like working from memory as I think it can manipulate your drawing by
remembering what you thought was most interesting about the building.
These drawings include lots of straight lines, very
structured and planned out onto graph paper which reminded me of Winde Rienstra’s
work. She used lots of straight lines and overlapping lines similar to
geometric patterns on top of simple white garments. Very simple colour schemes.

I like the symmetry
of this style work and I really enjoyed working in a mathematical way as I can’t
knit over summer. I love the layered lines and how the density of lines varies
across the drawing. I have missed the equipment available in university, like
the knitting machines and yarns available to compare to your drawing and I would
have really liked to include Photoshop into my sketch book but had no access to
using it. I have been considering yarn choice though from my drawings and
different techniques I’d use. I would like to use lots of ladder, hook ups and
different tensions of knitting to create the varied tensions of the lines and
the hook up repeatedly showing the layered lines.
